MCP (Model Context Protocol)
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in 2024, that defines how AI applications connect to external tools, data sources, and services through a common client-server interface.
What MCP is used for
Before MCP, every AI application needed custom integration code for each system it touched: one connector for the CRM, another for the database, another for file storage. MCP replaces that with a standard protocol. A system exposes its capabilities once through an MCP server, and any MCP-compatible AI client can then discover and use those tools, resources, and prompts. The standard has been adopted broadly across the industry, including by major model providers and developer tools, which makes MCP servers reusable building blocks rather than one-off integrations.
Why it matters for business software
Enterprises hold their most valuable data in internal systems: ERPs, CRMs, ticketing tools, and databases. An AI assistant is only useful if it can reach that data safely. MCP gives businesses a controlled gateway: the server defines exactly which operations are exposed, so access can be scoped, logged, and audited. It also protects the integration investment, because a connector built today keeps working as AI clients and models change. For teams planning an AI roadmap, MCP is the plumbing layer that keeps agents and company systems loosely coupled.
How Wizcoder AI Labs uses it
We build custom MCP servers that expose client systems, such as ERPs and internal APIs, to AI agents in a controlled way. This is a core part of our AI agent development and workflow automation work, and it lets the enterprise software we build participate directly in AI-driven processes.
